Alexa Shopping Lists: A Step-by-Step User Guide

      August 4, 2020

One of Alexa’s most useful features is its ability to create smart lists, such as Alexa shopping list, Alexa to-do list, Alexa grocery list, etc.

With Alexa, creating and managing shopping lists is extremely simple. In most cases, you simply have to voice your commands, and Alexa will perform the desired actions, be it adding new items to your Alexa shopping list or removing items from the Alexa grocery list.

However, Alexa shopping list also offers excellent functionality because of its Amazon integration. Once you have an Alexa shopping list, you can directly access those items in your Amazon app, which streamlines the online shopping process.

Alexa shopping lists can perform a wide range of tasks to simplify your life. Most people aren’t even aware of everything their Alexa shopping list can do.

In this article, we give you a step-by-step guide to every single action you can perform with your Alexa shopping list. We also give you an overview of some of the most useful Alexa shopping list commands for voice control.

      1. How to create Alexa shopping lists

Method 1: Create different types of Alexa lists through the Alexa app

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > Create List.
      • Enter ‘name your list’ and confirm.
      Create Alexa shopping list

Method 2: Create different types of Alexa lists using voice commandsSay, “Alexa, create a grocery list” or “Alexa, create a holiday list” or “Alexa, create a [type of list].”

      2. How to edit your shopping list name?

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > Left swipe your list (default Alexa list names cannot be edited)
      • Select Edit
      • Change name > Select done

      Edit Alexa shopping list

      3. How to add items to Alexa shopping list?

Method 1: Add items to Alexa shopping list through the Alexa shopping list app

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > Select your list or use default Alexa list > Add Item.
      • Type the item name, like “eggs” or “milk.”
      • Tap Done.

Add item to alexa shopping list

Method 2: Add items to Alexa shopping list using voice commands

      • Adding Single Items to Alexa Shopping List: Say, “Alexa, add [item] to my shopping list.”
      • Adding Multiple Items to Alexa Shopping List: Say, “Alexa, add [item 1], [item 2], and [item 3] to my shopping list.

      4. How to check & clear off items on Alexa shopping list?

Method 1: Removing multiple items from Alexa shopping list using Alexa shopping list app

While removing multiple items, it’s a lot easier to check off items on Alexa shopping list using the Alexa app:

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > Select your list or default Alexa list.
      • Tap the little circle next to the item you want to check off to remove from Alexa shopping list.
      • The checked-off items automatically move to the bottom of the list under the Completed section and become grayed out.
      • If you want to hide the checked-off items from your Alexa shopping list, tap the three dots on the upper right corner, and select Hide Completed.

Method 2: Removing single items from Alexa shopping list using voice commands

While it’s possible to add multiple items to your Alexa shopping list with a single voice command, the same doesn’t apply to removing items. If you need to remove four items, you need to repeat commands for each of them separately.

While removing single items from Alexa shopping list, you have to say, “Alexa, remove [item] from my shopping list.” However, while removing multiple items from Alexa shopping list using voice commands, you have to do the following:

      • Say, “Alexa, remove [item 1] from my shopping list”.
      • Pause.
      • Say, “Alexa, remove [item 2] from my shopping list.”
      • Pause.
      • Say, “Alexa, remove [item 3] from my shopping list.”
      • Repeat.

      5. How to access Alexa shopping list?

Method 1: Access Alexa shopping list through the Alexa app

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > Select your list you have created or default Alexa list.
      • You can now see your complete Alexa shopping list.

Method 2: Access Alexa shopping list on Echo Show using voice commands

This method will only work for those who have an Echo Show or another Alexa-enabled device with a screen. Say, “Alexa, show my shopping list,” and you’ll see your entire Alexa shopping list on the device’s screen.

Method 3: Listen to a narration of Alexa shopping list using voice commands

Say, “Alexa, what’s on my shopping list?” Alexa will first tell you the number of items you have on your Alexa shopping list, and then proceed to read them out. Alexa will read out the first five items, ask you if you want to hear more, proceed to read out the next five items on your Alexa shopping list, ask you if you want to hear more, and so on.

Method 4: Access Alexa shopping list through the Amazon app

      • Open your Amazon app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Your Lists > View Lists > Alexa Shopping Lists.
      • You can now scan your complete Alexa shopping list on Amazon.
      • If you want, you can also search for the items on your Alexa shopping list on Amazon directly without typing them in the search bar.

      • Your phone’s sharing menu will pop up. Select your email, WhatsApp, or Files, or any other app, and send it to yourself.

      9. How do I delete/archive my shopping list on Alexa?

Method 1: Delete Alexa shopping list through the Alexa app

In the new Alexa app there seems to be no way to delete a singular shopping list, but you can archive the lists and then delete all lists at once. Archiving is in our opinion just as good because you can view old archived lists.

To Archive a list (there are two ways)

      Archive method 1:

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > Left swipe on list > select archive

      Archive Alexa shopping list

      Archive method 2:

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > Select your shopping list.
      • Tap the three dots on the top right menu and tap Archive List. Now your list will appear under archived lists
      Archive Alexa shopping list

      Delete all archived lists:

      • Open your Alexa app.
      • Tap the horizontal lines on the upper left corner for the main menu.
      • Tap Lists > View archive (bottom center of screen)
      • Tap the three dots on the top right menu > Select Delete All  (bottom of screen)

      delete all archived shopping lists

Method 2: Delete/archive Alexa shopping list using voice commands

Say, “Alexa, clear my shopping list.”

List of Useful Alexa Shopping List Voice Commands

In this section of the article, we give you an overview of some of the most useful Alexa shopping list commands to help you control and manage your Alexa shopping list hands-free!

      • Creating a New List: “Alexa, create a list.”
      • Creating a Specific Type of List: “Alexa, create a [type of list].”
      • Adding Single Item to Alexa Shopping List: “Alexa, add [item] to my shopping list.”
      • Adding Multiple Items to Alexa Shopping List: “Alexa, add [item 1], [item 2], and [item 3] to my shopping list.”
      • Removing Single Item from Alexa Shopping List: “Alexa, remove [item] from my shopping list.”
      • View Alexa Shopping List on Echo Show: “Alexa, show my shopping list.”
      • Listen to Narration of Alexa Shopping List Items: “Alexa, what’s on my shopping list?”
