Google has announced a $450 million investment in security firm ADT to increase the adoption of IoT security devices.
Often when you hear IoT and security in the same sentence, it’s because another device has been hacked. However, secure devices can actually improve the safety of premises (don’t be too shocked.)
ADT is one of the most recognisable security brands in the world. You’ll almost certainly have seen one of the company’s somewhat iconic yellow alarms on the outside of a building to make anyone reconsider attempting a break-in.
As part of the investment, Google’s Nest smart home devices – such as cameras and displays – will be sold and installed by ADT.
The partnership between the two companies is expected to begin this year. Homes and small businesses will be the main targets for the security solutions.

Following the investment, Google will hold a 6.6 percent stake in ADT and expects Nest devices to become a “cornerstone” of the security firm’s offerings.
Google envisions its Nest devices helping ADT to reduce things such as false alarms, improve event detection, and ensure customers receive relevant notifications about what’s happening at their properties.

ADT customers will receive 30 days free access to Nest Aware, Google’s subscription service which provides a month’s storage of events and intelligent alerts.
It’s easy to see why Google decided to make the $450m investment; given the long-term returns are sure to be much higher. Allied Market Research predicts the IoT security market will reach $73.92 billion by 2027.
ADT has over six million customers in the US alone – that’s a lot of potential exposure Google will now receive for its own IoT security products.
